A Swift Review

Yes the title was my attempt at a pun. I’m not very good at puns.

So I just finished RJ Anderson’s ‘Swift’ which came out at the beginning of March. Though not a sequel to her Faery Rebels series (Knife, Rebel, Arrow) it does continue in the same world and falls chronologically after the last book Arrow. Featuring a new protagonist, Ivy, a wingless piskey whose mother is whisked away by spriggans, an ancient enemy of the underground dwelling piskeys. But her whole life changes when a member of the Delve, the abandoned mine the piskey’s have fashioned into their home, goes missing and Ivy’s brother hawls home the ‘spriggan’ responsible.

If you’ve read Faery Rebels you won’t be disappointing with this new installment, you might even see a familiar face. If you haven’t however, it’s not necessary to have read it to enjoy Swift but I’d recommend the series fully anyway.

Perhaps a little slow off the ground the book’s pacing mirror’s Ivy’s growth in the story, with great characterisation and world building. As with the previous Faery Rebels books Swift stands on it’s own with a great succession of twists as well as building up for future books in the series. Fans of the underdog will love Ivy, being wingless and born sickly, no one expects much of her and she more than proves herself through the course of the book but she doesn’t exactly return home in triumph, there’s still a lot of obstacles in Ivy’s future and I can’t wait to read about them.
